But when radium-dial-painting ‘studios’ were set up in Newark, New Jersey, and Ottawa, Illinois, hordes of working-class girls, some as young as 14, applied for jobs painting luminous numerals on watchfaces. Radium Dial's president, Joseph Kelly, was ousted in 1934. He opened another company to produce radium clock dials.

The Radium Girls left us all an extraordinary legacy. But who were they? In the book, The Radium Girls, Kate Moore introduces readers to these real women, who lived in New Jersey and in Illinois: separated by 800 miles, but united in their determination to stand up for themselves – and workers everywhere. “Radium Girls” transports us to that time: In Orange, New Jersey, in 1925, sisters Josephine and Bessie work for the company American Radium (standing in for the real United States Radium Corporation, which operated from 1914 to 1970).
